I think its flooding

Hi
I have a 90 rs all stock. The problem i am having is when i try to start the car it wants to start but then it seems to flood. I did have a code on the dash and it said the egr was bad. I have done some research and it doesn't sound like the egr can make it happen. I can look at the throttle body while turning over and the injectors are constantly putting fuel in the motor. Then i look at bottom of throttle body and it seems there is fuel coming out from where it is bolted on the motor.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Re: I think its flooding

As for the fuel flowing out, if it is between the manifold and the bottom of the TBI unit, the base gasket is dried out and needs to be replaced. Check that it isn't flowing out of the throttle shaft bores first.

A stuck open, or partially open EGR valve will cause the engine to be hard to start and will run lousy at low speeds.

A bad CTS (coolant temperature sensor) or connector can cause the engine to flood while cranking. The connector pieces tend to corrode and when they do the ECM thinks that the engine is colder then it really is and adds additional fuel.

RBob.

Re: I think its flooding

I want to thank all of who replied to my thread. I have finally got around to replacing the sensor and also had to replace the plugs and other stuff. Although the plugs were ok i felt with the flooding the plugs were needed. I went ahead and replaced the egr because that is the only code i was getting. It runs fine now thanks again

The coolant temp sensor might be bad or have a poor connection.

yes I think the line in the tank (rubber) that conects fuel pump to metal pick up has a large split , even though you can see fuel in the tb its not getting enough this happened to me and its common and Quite misleading without checking the pressure with a gague . can you get it started and feather the pedal to keep it running? if so than that feul line is the culprit

I am having a similar problem. My 91 GTA TPI cranks fine and runs for the first few minutes ok and then begins to flood out.

Re: I think its flooding

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it, see if it holds pressure when the engine is off. Or see #7 above.

Re: I think its flooding

Thank you for the reply. I will try both the fuel pressure and the temp sensor.

Re: I think its flooding

Once the pump stops running TBI systems don't hold fuel pressure.

Re: I think its flooding

Ok, I changed the temp sensor and I also found a ground wire that had broken and fixed it. I took the car for a drive this morning and it ran great.Thank you guys for the help. When I got back, I turn the car off. I went to move it and it now it does not want to crank. I can hear the pump priming, I opened the fuel line and it has fuel to the fuel rail. I checked to make sure I had fire to the plugs and it does. What is next?

Re: I think its flooding

What does "does not want to crank" mean? Does the starter turn the engine or not?

Re: I think its flooding

This car has always cranked with out even turning a full revolution. Now it spins over and does not even attemp to crank. This happened last night also and befor i took it this morning it did the same thing and all of a sudden it cranked right up and cranked up several times during my ride today.

I just went out to the shop and the car cranked right up 5 times with out a problem.

Re: I think its flooding

So we have to replace "crank(ed)" with start, so we can understand your problem.
Check for spark & look to see if the injectors are spraying, you might have a bad ignition module.

I have spark. Does the ignition module control the injectors also.

Re: I think its flooding

The ecm gets a reference from the distributor to fire the injectors, are they spraying?

Is their some way to tell if the injectors are working with out taking the intake and fuel rails off?

Re: I think its flooding

Well your under the tbi board, so you can't check them like a tbi b/c you have a tpi, you'll need to get a noid light to check them.
