Rear Main Seal
Hey guys,
I had a question about rear main seals. I'm buying some stuff from Summit that specifies a 2-piece seal, but do i really need to use a 2-piece with it? The parts in question are the crank and oil pan below.
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1∂=SPE%2D4988&N=700+4294925024+4294908216+4294908198+4294925232+4294840045+4294881326+115&autoview=sku

Logic would dictate that a 1-piece is easier to deal with, and the crank comes in a 1-piece version, but that oil pan doesn't, and I'd really like a finned aluminum one. Does the specification of the 1-piece or 2- piece really matter? If so, how much of an issue really is the maintenance of the 2-piece vs the 1 piece? Could someone please enlighten me?

the 2 piece pan wont work with a 1 piece RMS... 2 piece RMS have been around for a very long time they work and so do the 1 piece jobbers but a 2 piece seal is a little more tricky to get right if you havent done it before... and i believe that you can not use the 1 piece crank in a 2 piece block however they do make an adaptor to run a 2 piece crank in a one piece block

Your block will be 2 piece RMS if it was made before 1986, or 1 piece RMS if made after. All the other parts have to match the block.

from the factory or rebuilt? if its a rebuilt you probably have a pre-86 block.

"Replacement" crate engines can still be had with a 2 piece main, most notably the "Hecho en Mexico".

Well, the "Targetmaster" and "Goodwrench" replacement engines aren't exactly known for their outstanding build quality, so putting one on boost might be entertaining.

I don't know if it's a question of the quality of the casting or the machining, they're just made as inexpensive low-performance replacement engines.
