Solenoid is sticking, get a new solenoid, not a new starter.
The solenoid will come off of the starter by itself, take it to an auto store and have them match it up. About $10.00 to $15.00.

sounds like the starter is gummed up, It's not hard to rebuild your starter, and it's alot cheaper to rebuild your own than to take it to a shop. There's only a couple of parts to the starter, the main drive, which is just a small motor with a case,W/ windings, which rarely break,a Stator , that's the round part with two little shafts on each end. There are brushes that ride on one end of the shafts, These brushes may be bad, they should be about 1/2" long,if they are shorter than that they should be replaced. The small cylinder on top is the solenoid, youcan buy just the solenoid at the parts store fairly cheap. Also when you take the starter out, bench test it , just hook it up to a battery and try it and see what happens, if it sticks on the bench you can also try the little gear on the back, that engages to the flywheel,it's called a bendix,or starter drive.Well good luck, and don't be afraid to tear it apart, that's the only way you learn, Starter parts are kinda cheap, but getting a rebuilt starter can be expensive

I had the EXACt same thing happen to me. Man, is it frustrating, and dangerous. You could just replace the solenoid, but chances are, the rest of the starter wasn't put together very well, either. I'd try to get your money back and get a new starter.

Also, a starter that is sticking like that will bench test perfectly, because it will engage when it has power and disengage when the power is completely cut. You probably fried a few ground wires. Be sure you check the ground from the battery, the negative battery cable, and the ground strap that goes from the block to the firewall. Those are probably all fried. In fact, I had to replace ALL of my battery cables, and I'm still not quite sure that I found all of the wires that were fried. Good luck, and man, do I feel for you.

I had this happen to me when I was going 50mph down the road. Ya know how there are some big wires bolted to the middle then 1 little wire on the side? That little wire came loose and touched the big wires. It was the single most worst noise I've ever heard come from my car.
well its a new starter so I proly gotta replace it anyway, but do I need to take the exuast off to really get the starter out? yeah im figuring I need to replace my ground wires.
I had that happen on a brand new motor that was'nt even primed yet...not good and the starter was brand-new! but it was from VIP...a cheesy parts store in my area and the funny/frustrating part is I had to do this 6 TIMES! before I got a good starter....so even brand new/Rebuilt starters do this...good quality products!! anywho replace the starter, if it cranked that long it probably wont be sticking around for much longer.
