Can I beat a new Celica?

Hey guys, I probably shouldn't even be posting this, but my boss has a 2001 Celica GT-S. Decked out with the usual rice mods, 3 foot wing, fart muffler, and intake. I dunno much about the new Celicas, but he's been itching to take me on in my GTA. I know they have like 180HP, and are comparable to the new RSX, plus his is an Auto. He's also got the weight advantage since he's got the lighter car and I have a boat of a GTA. You guys think I can take him? If so, by how much? I just really wanna shut him up already. Oh, my setup is an L98/Auto, pretty much stock except for Flowmaster Catback, ported intake, K&N air filter... TB bypass... etc.
I'm probably just being paranoid, but I just wanna make sure. I have one week's paid vacation on the line here...

you should smoke him if you launch right. ease into WOT, dont just floor it or youll spin, giving him the jump. by the way, you said you have your intake ported, is that just the plenum, or the whole thing?

i was always under the assumption that the "s" in the gts made it a standard with a 6 spd...i could be wrong...but are you 100% sure he doesnt have just the gt model?

either way unless hes dumped $4000 into the motor youll win..hands down

You will definately take him. If I beat one in my little 305 than you should destroy him, especially an auto. From what I've heard an auto GT-S is significantly slower than a manual one. You can take him from a stop or a roll so don't worry about the outcome. Good luck anyways.

i ran with a celica a few months ago when i had my 305.
just crusing down the hwy in NJ when he drove past and the fun began. we were preety even from about 60 to 110 with me not really gunning it hard(about 3/4 maybe alittle more). at that point i chickened out because i haven't driven that road for a long time and i didn't know the layout. if anyone is from the newark area of NJ then it was Rt. 21 north.
it was a killer hwy that alot of people have died on the past few years. lots of twists and turns.

so with a GTA from the roll or the stop you should have him

Thanks for the input everyone! The race is on for next week when I resolve all my issues with my car and get everything back together. And yes by ported intake, I meant just the plenum. He hasn't done squat to his car other than the mods I mentioned so he shouldn't be making much more than the stock power specs. One week's paid vacation sounds REALLY good...

i say it depends on the race ... from a stop or from a roll. if its from a roll he will have the advantage at first (being a 6 speed) but i think with all the torque you have you should beat him

Biker,

You are damn right about RT21, I live right off that road and it is dangerous.

My friends and I used to race where the bridge is (going north), and quite a few people have tagged the wall there (some have died there). Not a good road anymore since they haven't paved it in 10 years, too many rutted spots and whoop-t-doos.

Coming from the other end (Passaic), there is a long stretch (about 1-1/2 miles) where there is an opportunity to open your car up. Coming off the turn at about 80 onto the straightaway, I had my Camaro up to 155 and had enough space to slow down to about 100 for the turn (you can take the turn at 110+).

FYI for all the Jersey peeps out there.

Motorcycle idiots love the road-lots of turns and lots of dropped bikes.

lived and grew up and graduated from Harrison. go up there every once and awhile because of the parents.
are you talking about that little S turn going south into newark? not really much of an S, you just jerk your wheel alittle left then right? seen a guy in a late 80s supra (this was back in like 92-93) smack the car and total it right in front of me. they do need to pave that road. have you ever seen a cop on that road? i never have, there is no where for them to hide!!!!
used to take that road to and from willowbrook all the time, after daring death on that road, you pull into Newark and you dare death again and pray you don't get car jacked!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, its the turn coming out from under the bridge on the northbound side, really nasty if you are flying.

Newark is the one place you don't want to get carjacked - they take your car and then someone else robs you before the police arrive. Gotta love NJ, nothing but ghettos, Mcmansions, and Mafia.

You have to rip his head off and this is how you do it. You didn't mention a posi rearend, gears or drag radials, so start with these items. A 3.73:1 gearset, a posi (welded diff if you don't have $) and a pair of BFG drag radials mounted on your stock rims will move your car off the line. Strip your car's interior removing as much weight as possible. Take out the passenger seats, spare tire, jack, etc. Practice launching your car off the line, so when you line up, head to head, that one week's paid vacation is your's!

A GTA should be able to take one. I probably couldn't though. My neighbor has a '00 GTS 6 speed, but, thats a 6 speed not an auto. I can't imagine how much an auto would hurt that car. They're light, right at 2500, and 180 HP from a 1.8 is pretty damn good, but.... If Jim's barely cracked 14s with cold air/loud *** butt bazooka exhaust... theres no way in hell an auto would be that fast... and a GTA probably is faster n that anway.... so you should be good.

Diners are good - gotta eat.

Malls suck - braindead people going in and out F up traffic (Rt 46, 17, 1, 4...) .

Aren't you happy that you left NJ (for your sanity anyway).

Jersey girls are the worst - not all that good looking, mostly empty upstairs, full of bad attitude, and no good in the sack, I prefer imports in this area.

Crowded isn't the word, 8 million people in a state meant for 4 million, not to mention the fact everyone is on the road at the same damn time.

And of course the high home prices - people are paying $500K+ for a big, ugly, underbuilt house in a terrible area and think they are hot zhit.

I think I may follow your lead biker, just a tad farther south - FL.

At least I can get away from "Jersey Girls".

Peace out...

IMO, florida's not all THAT bad (came down from bergen county about 5 years ago). i mean....i still haven't quite gotten used to the heat, but for the most part it's pretty cool. i mean yeah, there are some ghetto parts, but i guess you get that in a lot of the more populated states.

come on down, paul!

One of my best friends has an auto GTS. You should destroy it. It takes forever for that thing to reach the meat of the power curve with an auto.

again daily driver... drag radials can be used as a daily driver but they wear out kinda quick.... and also why spend buy them if you don´t use them that often?

Strip your car's interior removing as much weight as possible. Take out the passenger seats, spare tire, jack, etc.
really worth doing all this work on a daily driver
I mean who really wants to drive around without a pass seat for there g/f a jack and spare tire for if you get a flat and all that.

Practice launching your car off the line, so when you line up, head to head, that one week's paid vacation is your's!
now I agree with this... practice the launch

either way though most of these ideas are not worth doing for a daily driver on one race that the the GTA should win anyway.... why go through all the work... only way he should lose is bad launch. bad running car. or the other guy has a lot more done to his car then what he says

YOu should kill him..

2 things that make up this race:

1 it's an auto.

2, it's either an 02 or an 01 right? If so, he got screwed out of 500 rpms... 00 was the last year that celica's could rev about 8000 rpms.. Too many people I guess were blowing the motors so they reduced the redline down a good bit.. Even the toyota matrix has a higher redline than the gts celi now... Should be a sad race.. If it was a 2000 gts 6 speed, it may be a good race though if he can drive..

You'll KILL him!! I had one the other day going down Alpharetta Hwy. They are quick cars, but not fast. He's gotta make quick shifts and yours will barely have to shift at all. I don't see it being much of an issue. Enjoy your vacation!

Redline doesn't matter, but FUEL CUT OFF DOES..

The fuel cut off was moved up as well... It's pretty hard to land back in the powerband on a 4speed when your powerband has been reduced by 25% by toyota from the factory, that was what I was originally saying...

btw they were blowing motors due to mis shifts, nothing to do with just reving too high.. People would just miss the shift from 5-4 and hit 2 instead.. Thats why they moved the red-line...

not sure on if this is true or not

but is there a chance that even though they might have reduced the redline that the powerband is just as fat?

Well if the powerband is just as fat then why are the times between a 00 celica and a 01 celica .5 seconds off in the 1/4?

who knows

maybe different air temps, track conditions, launch tires, who knows

but it could still be that the powerband was cut down... I just don't know much about these cars
