Well it depends what year 3.8 it is. In 1996-1997 there was a V-6 performance group (no not the apperance group) On both Camaro and Firebird. It included sport steering, tighter suspension, dual outlet exhaust and 3.42 gears in the autos. One of these cars as an auto dead stock can run about a low fifteen second 1/4, as for the regular 3.8's expect around the high fifteens or low sixteens.

Funny, I witnessed a BONE STOCK (including paper filter) automatic run a 15.2 w/ a 250lb driver, and a 5 speed run a 14.7 w/ a 170 lb driver. I hate reported track times. Then again, like Chevy's going to post that a bone stock 6 speed LS1 can break into the 12's (witnessed a 12.97....lid and maf later he's at 12.6).

I would drive one of the 3.8's but after a nice exhaust and a cold air kit they sound really rice like.

My girlfriend bought a 01 and since i've put on cold air exhaust,

But the car was a cherry from the factory,

I will get the time slip when i get home but the car ran at ennis
14.43@100 mph

It was wierd when i bought it, i mean she bought (i drive it more than she does) It pulled really hard. When we left the dearlship we were going down the road at about 40 and i downshift to second. It put me in the back of the seat. I was like holy ****, you sure we didnt get a Z. (thats what I really wanted, I mean she really wanted but her parents would'nt let her)

I'll get the timeslips and show'em

the sport option cars are called y87's ,they come with the v8's equipment besides engine and some suspension pieces . these can be in either choice of transmission and are probably the quickest of the 3.8's and are quit decently matched to the performance of the 96-98 4.6 GT's . they get good gas mileage too. the horsepowers not bad , but they need more torque. the comment about the 3.8's low end torque is not correct . they are more of a midrange torquer and the top end,at least on mine is where it shines the most . in fact if you look at the engine , it looks like an lt1 with two cylinders chopped off. ask me all the questions you have and i can try to answer them. or if anybody wants to know more about the 3.8, try firebirdv6.com , it's where i spend my time the most.

My brother has a 2000 Camaro with the 3.8 and auto. When he bought it the guy said it had some "special" package. I didn't really pay much attention (I was sad he didn't get the Z-28), but it does have dual outlets from the muffler. All the non-Z's that I have seen have the single outlet. He put a flowmaster and it does sound kinda ricy
Anyways, I do think I is pretty quick, in my opinion it would have beat my '85 Z28 when it was stock.
However, I saw a real nice one at the track and was surpriced it ran a high 17's. I know were I live the elevation is higher and the times are slower, but 17's???
Did he just not know how to drive, I think it was a 5-speed.

Funny, I raced a 5.0 in a 99' firebird I was test driving. I had the 5-speed, and I pulled on him hard after he launched. I like them, just would never buy one.

These had 200 hp and only 220 lb/ft of torque. They were quite quick but that was the most power they ever got. I think they would be ok down low and suck up high. You should be able to take one especially a convertible. They weiged in at 3350. There also is no major difference in the times between the 5speed and auto so don't think that will be an advantage or disadvantage.
