Thanks alot John. I just wasn't sure if the site was real or not.
I think that plugs for draining the gear fluid.
Also what did you do to the rear? And how much power can it handle?

Axle/Gears: 4.11 LS1 Rear End
let's see -
That rear end was originally from an 88 IROC with 3.27 gears.
New 3 series Carrier
New 3.70 Gears
Install kit with bearings
Replaced both Axles
New Bearing and seal on each axle
1989 9-Bolt Disk brake Backing plates
89 & Up alumnimun calipers and 11.7" rear brakes
Control Arms and Panhard bar from a 95Z with Poly bussings
Sandblasted / Sealed / Painted The housing
The guy that installed the new 3.70 gears *ucked up the POSI and that is why the carrier and axle seals had to be replaced By another mechanic ! ( It's been trouble free since 5/21)
I can't tell you what the rear is "supposed" to handle - but the rear has been punished pretty hard for a month with no issues. I have been working the rest of rubber from a set of Tires that need to be replaced ! My berlinetta makes 350HP at the flywheel and the rear is really put under a lot of stress. Not just due to the power in the engine - but due to the way my tranny works; It was rebuilt to handle 400 HP and at WOT it will shift at about 5700 to as high as 6000RPM. The tranny will also Jump from 4th to 2nd at higher speeds than a "normal" 700R4 in an attempt to use every bit of power from the engine. I have a more "abusive" set-up than most camaro's do.........
You say that doesn't mean much since the rear was only installed for a month - right !?!?! Well the rear end that was previously installed in my Berlinetta was a 3.45 BW 9 bolt and that one is still sitting in my garage with nothing wrong with it. That 3.45 rear was in the car for about 2-3 years & I never had a problem (other than a slight leak at the axle seal that was always there !)
While I'm on the subject of Rear ends - The 4.11 gears for my 95 Z arrived today !!!! I hope to get them installed in a month or so,....... That damn 95 is a REAL quick car right now - I can't wait to see what 4.11's do for it's quickness. (I should also be finally able to get into 6th gear before reaching 80 MPH !! )
P.S. Ed; You can make out the Shop rag I had stuck in the cover !!! The rubber plug was MIA for awhile !!

Cost ----->
Let's see,.....
(You must realize that I never wanted to figure this out !!! )
Carrier: $450
89 11.7" brakes: $150
Axles (my own used spares)
Axle Bearings / Seals: $120
3.70 Gears: $200 (new- unused)
Install kit $165
Brake lines and caliper mounting bolts: $20
Labor: $500
Total: $1485
I didn't need the axle bearing / seals or the larger brakes & $220 of labor was wasted on the mechanic that *ucked up my rear. That's about $500 is un-necessary costs........ (not counting the $450 carrier I had to replace due to his incompetence !)
The complete 3.27 IRON disk rear originally cost me $50 from a buddy in complete working order. I had it installed in an 86 Z I owned and never had a problem.
I found a gears for $200 so I bought an install kit and had them installed by a idiot. He didn't torque the axles correctly after installing the 89 backing plates. His own statement was " I torque'd them down to 25 FP's myself....." (The service manual calls for 46 FP's for disk brake rears.) After driving the car for about 20 miles on it's -Maiden voyage- I felt the car "wiggling" in the *** and parked it. The axles were floating in the housing and shredded the carrier internals and the axle seals. I replaced the axles with good ones because I thought they might be bent also. The bearings and seals were not really required - but I had the new mechanic install them anyway !
No small claims court involved - he is still paying for screwing me over to this day...............
:nono:
