Blue smoke from the engine bay...

When my car is up to temperature, blue smoke and a very bad smell comes out from the engine bay area, very near from the distributor cap and the transmission dipstick. Temperature is normal, oil pressure is normal...Any ideas?

The car is a 1982 Pontiac Trans am with the crossfire engine.

Re: Blue smoke from the engine bay...

Blue smoke usually comes out of the tailpipe from oil burned up in the combustion chamber. It could be that you have that going on along with a exaust leak.. or I suppose it is possible that their is an oil leak causing the smoke. It would have to be hot, so I would assume it is dripping down on the exhaust. Probably either head or oil pan, get some dye, or take it into a shop to identify the area.

Could also be the gasket under the dizzy, the oil galley plug right next to it on the block or, most likely, the rear china wall/intake manifold gasket.

clean eng. & eng. bay top to bottom & underside of eng. . good tune-up include the PCV system . 20-30 years of crud build-up on an eng. does not smell good . after clean & tune scour eng. for with a strong light for any oil leaks & fumes . good luck .

Run your hand under the back of the valve cover lip and head for leaking oil also.
