Not 100% sure but if an 82-84 speedometer will fit the 85 cluster hawks sells an overlay for 140 or 160mph. I've also seen a post on here where someone used a second gen speedometer and those can go to 140mph. There both mechanical so they should work but I'm not sure how different the 85 housing is from pre 85 housings.

Re: '85 140MPH+ SPEEDOMETER?

I'm pretty sure that the 140MPH speedo that comes on '86-92 Trans Ams is the same and can fit on the '85 even though as this particular moment I don't recall the '85 having a 140 speedo. Look up on ebay I just saw one tachometer & a speedo being sold separately and also the whole instrument cluster including gauges being sold. I think the speedo by itself was $99 Here's the link to the whole search results on ebay -->

And here's the link to the page for just the 140mph speedo for $99

85 = Cable

86+ = Electric

Re: '85 140MPH+ SPEEDOMETER?

John in RI is correct, the '86-'92s are electric. I was just hoping that someone by now might have made a repro with 140MPH on it. Thought that I had seen one a while back on ebay. I should have grabbed it. Just disappointing to have a car that will do 140+ but not show it on the speedo. Thanx for the replies!

Re: '85 140MPH+ SPEEDOMETER?

Even if you can find an 82-84 speedo, it's not going to match the '85 cluster. 1985 was the only year that still had a cable driven speedometer but with the new gage face pattern. If that isn't a concern, then it might work. I also have an '85 TA and have pondered this dilemma. Hawks does a service where they recalibrate and put a new overlay on your speedo. It's not cheap! The other option is to install an 86-92 cluster and go electronic. For now, I'm stickin' with what I got.

Re: '85 140MPH+ SPEEDOMETER?

Yea im not to worried to much about it matching perfect from what iv seen it wont look to bad especially with a 140mph in it.. I really just want know how fast im goin I top mine out quik and im sure iv had it past 140mph just pisses me off I dont know how fast u feel me.... I looked at hawks online they had overlays but only white and only for 85mph but it was only $20 thats not to expensive at all considering a new speedo goin to run $75-$175 from what iv seen and u gota change to electric

Re: '85 140MPH+ SPEEDOMETER?

Hawks still has the part I mentioned. You can find it here: http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/19...0-speedometer/

I just couldn't justify $249 at the time, and now it's a steal at $199? No thanks. But hey, it's a 160mph cable speedo for 82-84 so it can work in your '85. Oh, did I forget to mention the core charge?

Re: '85 140MPH+ SPEEDOMETER?

Will they take my speedo for it sense itsdiffrent? ? Iv looked at it already about ten times today alone its price is a little high for me but with $75 off that would put it in my range around $100 hoping to find one for cheaper tho I got a few buddies lookin around for me..... I looked on hawk's they dont have a 140mph overlay for the 85mph they only had 85mph in diffrent colors and that was just white and silver

Re: '85 140MPH+ SPEEDOMETER?

Yes, that is exactly what happens, you send in your 85mph speedo as a "core". They recalibrate it and put a new overlay on and send it back to you. Essentially you're getting your speedo back. It occurs to me that most speedometer shops can do this. If you have one near you, they may be able to do the same thing for less. It wouldn't hurt to do a little searching in your area.
