5.3 Fi to carb conversion

So I have heard stories of people doing a carb conversion on the gen 3 5.3 engine. I have thought about doing this conversion myself but I was wondering if anyone has done it and whatever they can tell me about it.

I didn't know you could get a HEI distributor for these motors?

From what little I have gathered it alot of people will just leave the coil pack conversion.

As far as intake, does anyone know if there is a generic kit for this conversion??

Re: 5.3 Fi to carb conversion

i just listed what you need to get it to run. Then buy all the ls1 swap parts from hawks or similar.

ls1tech.com has a lot of buildups as does the ls1 board on thirdgen.

if you really want a dizzy, GMPP offers a front cover that lets you run a dizzy for a Ford 351W engine.

No, when I do this I will be keeping the coil pack set up and running the MSD ignition box.

Re: 5.3 Fi to carb conversion

What is it you're hoping to gain with the carb setup over the FI? part of the magic of these engines is the well designed injection system. Unless you're going crazy with the setup, I feel you'd probably benefit from sticking with the fuel injection system and getting it dyno tuned (or similar).

There is the possibility of going crazy, to be honest one of the biggest problems is that I HATE wiring and I really HATE having to do the dyno tuning thing, it can get really expensive and every mod you do, you have to get it dyno tuned. Lets face it, if I where at the track and in a pinch, I would be out of luck. I do agree totaly though, the FI system rocks on these motors, but I hav heard of great things from carbing these engins.

Re: 5.3 Fi to carb conversion

You still have to deal with (to some extent) wiring and computer tuning when you swap to carb on these engines due to the lack of a distributor. Since I have not done that swap, I do not have all the details, but you will have to tap into a few of the stock sensors and the MSD (or relabeled GM box) still has spark curves to choose from and tweak to get everything in order.

Unfortunately not as simple as swapping from say TPI/TBI to old school carb on a SBC; electronics are still required

You are probably correct on that. MSD makes such a box that reads off of the cam and I think crank sensor to still us the coil packs. However there are ways to us a distributor. I think gm performance sell such intake and then I believe it is just a cam swap away from a traditional distributor. I personally would keep the coil packs, it leaves a cleaner look, but I am just not sure how timing advancing would be done.
