It almost sounds like a faulty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
I do not know what the default mode for it is, if you disconnect it.

Have you tried getting someone else to crank it, while the car is in a dark place while you looked for sparks?

Have you checked for exhault leaks...

Assuming this is a Third Generation 82 - 92 Camaro or Firebird and you put headers on it.
Based on the 3.1L I would assume its around 90-92.

Here is my rule of thumb.
If the car starts fine, drives fine and seems to pretty much oddity free, and you have some spare parts left...

The sound of water boiling is really odd though, that is throwing me way off.

I would expect burning wires to sound more like bacon...

Another thing came to mind also.
What do you have your fuel pressure set to?

I had a similar problem and found out my bypass regulator was not sending the correct pressure to the carb.

I was once told by a machinist to use Permatex Form a Gasket #2 sealant for gaskets that you want to make sure don’t leak.

Since then I have used that on oil pan cork gasket and the rubber seals...

I have seen this happen when water got in the distributor. Just a shot it the dark though.
