Another possibility (though rare) could be the spring improperly seated up in the k-member pocket causing a coil to get caught on that ridge and bind.

I think the fact that the spring was broken is a sign of fatigue. The spring will probably break again. So I would say use them to practice cutting good, and buy a new set to cut to run in the car...
